When a snail grows does its shell grow as well?

Do snail and even tortoises get into new shells or their old shells grow along with them? They are hard shells so I don't know?|||Think about it /:o)

Where would they find an empty shell? The shell is the same as your finger nails; it grows as they grow. It's made from calcium deposits that they digest in their food. One tiny bit isn't hard, but when it's added to the rest it makes the whole thing hard. You can put your finger through one sheet of paper, but not ten. Same thing; big snails are harder to squash than little snails.

Hermit crabs pinch empty snail shells, when the snail dies.|||Their shells grow with them look at a snails shell and you can see the rings show their growth.|||Marcus do you really crush snails, why?

Answer OK|||Yes it does. The shell grows in a spiral, cone shape so it never needs to stretch.

Snails who's shell don't grow are called Slugs. Slugs do have shells but they are internal, so they cannot be seen.
