What kind of snail should i get to clean my freshwater tank?

I have a small tank 2.5 gallons. I have 5 fish, a beautiful blue beta, and four neon tetras. I have a small filter and two live plants. I hate seeing left over food and plant matter floating around. I would really like to get a snail to eat up the leftover food but want to make sure it won't eat my fish or my plants. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!|||You don't need to worry about having ANOTHER creature in a tank that is already severly overstocked. You need to worry about rehoming the fish you have, because I'm sorry, but there is no way they are comfortable, happy, or healthy.

2.5 gallons is BARELY enough for a betta. In fact, for a single betta it's the BARE minimum, but 5 gallons is recommended. They are neon tetra both, are tropical fish, and neons are sensitive to water quality... So they need a heater as well as the filter. The water needs to be a steady 78 degrees F.

Seriously, if you want more than a single betta, you need AT LEAST a 10 gallon tank, or return what you have.|||Adding a snail to your tank will only aggravate an already horrible situation.

2.5 gallons is too small for any fish, let alone 5 of them.

Your Betta needs 5 gallons minimum.

Your Neons, though tiny, are very active fish, who require excellent water quality. They should be kept in nothing under 20-gallons, and since they are shoaling fish, need to be kept in groups of 6 or more.

Snails are heavy on the bio load, and will bring your water parameters further off the charts than I suspect they already are.

Please bring your current fish's living conditions up to at least the bare minimum. They won't last very long in their current setup.

Fish profile sites that include minimum aquarium size:

I really (not to be mean) recommend you tank them all back to the store.

You can still use the tank though, do a planted shrimp tank or a nice planted snail tank, Ghost shrimp are actually pretty cute, and the same goes for Red Cherry shrimp, they will be happy in your 2.5 gallon. Shrimp are actually pretty good pets, i always feel bad when to have to feed a few to my puffer.

Tetras need to be in schools of 6 or more.. and need a minimum of 20 gallons, Betta needs 5 ideally.|||Your tank is already grossly overstocked. Return the tetras, they're schooling fish that need to be kept in groups of at least six to eight. For a group of that size, nothing under 20g is recommended.

The bare minimum for one betta fish is a 5g tank, complete with a sponge filter and a heater set to 80F. Please upgrade your aquarium or return the fish if you cannot house it properly.

To answer your initial question, it's not the snail's responsibility to clean the tank, it's yours. And just to let you know, all snails eat plants.|||I would be careful when selecting a snail for your tank. I found this out the hard way. I both one snail for my tank, not knowing they can reproduce by themselves. It started reproducing and reproducing and pretty soon the snails has taken over my tank. Here is some information I found: Most snails are hermaphrodites. This means that they are both male and female. All hermaphroditic snails can lay eggs. They can "mate" with themselves and thus only one can reproduce in an aquarium or pond. So make sure that when you select a snail that you select one that won't reproduce by itself.|||Don't get a snail or anything to "clean" your tank except the water changes you need to be doing. Gently scrap off the sides of the aquarium and siphon the crud out w/ half of the water once per week and you will have a great healthy aquarium. Do not any anything else to this tank because you are already pushing it for a 2.5 gallon.|||for the fish you have you will need a 10 gallon and thats pushing it. either buy a bigger tank or return your fish. if you do, you could add your snail and nothing else if that makes you feel any better
