How do I know if my aquatic snail passed away?

Hi there. I noticed my snail hasn't moved for about a day and a half, two days tops. Sometimes when I get close to the tank, I see his body move inside a little bit. How do I know if he's dead? Because I don't want to take him out and flush him not knowing for sure, obviously.|||they will have a faint smell that resembles a dead rat's dead smell.

however, please keep in mind that snails do get inactive periods.

my snails do them all the time. I also think they are dead but just to be on the safe side i get a small bowl, add some of the water from the aquarium and then drop him inside it.

leave for a day or 2 and see if he has moved.

if he hasnt, then by now he should have the bad smell that signifies death.|||Pull him out and smell him. You will know immediately. If it smells dead, it is.|||Snails will stay in there shells for days on end and this is normal. To ensure he is still living you can take him out , put him on his back and blow cool air over him. If is alive it will emerge from the shell and try to flip itself over. If he smells bad..he is dead|||Those things last a LONG time. Had to do a Biology experiment, had one living in a small container for a month without care or cleaning. Thought it was dead. Chuck it outside in the open air. Come back two days later, guess whose still alive?! Best to just leave him in a separate container if you are unsure. When things start floating out...you know it's past time.|||DO NOT take the snail out in the air for a long period of time to see if it is dead. all you have to do is pluck him out and smell him he will stink if he is dead. Like way more than to average fishy smell. like rotting flesh that has been sitting around for a long time.|||wow

well if you c him move

a little he is not dead

yay!!

:D|||When snails die, they release their trapdoors. I don't know about the smell, but if your snail's trapdoor is hanging, you can tell that he's dead.

Which snails suitable for a freshwater tank cannot breed without another snail?

I want one snail in my tank, I heard there's a kind that aren't hermaphrodites and can only breed with two?

Was it mystery snails? I just want to double check before I buy one and find my tank overrun!|||Mystery snails might, since they do have separate genders, but if a female has mated with a male, they can store the sperm (much like livebearing fish) and can continue to lay fertile eggs for a few months. Since the eggs are laid above water, it's relatively easy to remove the egg masses if you don't want babies. Or, you might want to look at this website under their reproduction and see if you're able to determine which are males before you buy them: http://www.applesnail.net/

If you want to be absolutely certain of no reproduction, get a nerite snail (you may have to order online or have your local store special order these). These are a species which can live in freshwater, but need too have salt/brackish water to reproduce: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_鈥?/a>

Another possible consideration is your tank temperature. Apple snails actually prefer cooler temperatures and can live 10 yrs in a room-temperature tank, but their life span shortens to 2-3 years in a tropical tank. In warmer water, a nerite might be better, although these can live in cooler tanks too.|||No mystery snails are hermaphrodites. Apple snails arent.

|||Mystery snail (also known as apple snails) require a male or female to breed. If you do select one and it happens to be female, it's possible that you might have baby snails. The females can lay eggs several months after becoming inseminated. If this happens, many pet stores will take the babies.|||Neutered Ones! *smiles*

How to remove algae off the shell of an apple snail in aquarium?

I bought an apple snail which was covered with green algae and kept it in my aquarium. How to clean the algae and retain the snail's original yellow color?|||With a toothbrush, very gently. Avoid scrubbing the snail itself or the shell near the opening, as this could injure or kill it. |||Grab the snail.

Wipe it down with a plain nylon pot scrubbie. (NO detergent)

Put snail back in tank

I dont know if it will be the original colour, but at least it wont be green :-)

Are there any patio container plants that are slug and snail resistant?

I live in the UK and now is the time to plant up my patio containers. Last year I tried to protect them with copper foil but unfortunately the slugs and snails still managed to get to my plants, I think from from nearby trees and shurbs which overshadow the pots. In the past I have tried salt and slug pellets but they get washed away in the rain (and we get a lot of that here). So, I wonder, are there any slug or snail resistant plants? Thanks.|||Hi Thirsty,

As the first poster has said, they don't seem to bother lavenders much, nor do the appear interested in the foxgloves that I have in my garden. I have also noted that marigolds seems to stand a good chance against them once they are more mature plants. Another plant they seem to leave alone are ferns. I have a border full of ferns and hostas, the hostas get munched but the ferns are perfect.

Campanulas, carnations, dianthus all seem to do well in containers in my garden, and the petunias and mini marguerettes which I planted up two weeks ago have survived the slimy beasts so far.

I must admit I am a devil for the organic slug pellets though, everything gets a liberal dowsing of them as soon as I plant anything out. Have you thought of filling a container/tub with peas, beans, tomatoes, borage, rosemary, thymes etc - they are not necessarily slug proof but some veg get some lovely flowers on and then you can eat them later in the season.

Hope this helps and that you have a lovely slug/snail free summer :-)|||No such thing but the good news is there are several ways to get rid of the pests. "ORTHO" makes a slug and snail bait that I have found to be very effective. Or you could put out several saucers of beer. Push the saucer down into the dirt until the little buggers can climb in easily They will climb in And drink themselves to death.|||In a word no, i use broken egg shells, they dont like slithering over sharp edges, also try vaseline on the edge of the pots or at the base, they wont cross it.|||Lavender is good.

How long can a snail go without eating?

I have an aquatic snail, I'm not positive as to what kind, but i want to know how long an aquatic snail can go without eating. Is it more like a week, or more like 3 days? Also, is the only thing they eat algae?|||Some snails are capable of breeding like theres no tommorow. Even on their own, some species are capable of breeding, as they do not have gender differences( both can pee while standing or both prefer you keep the toilet seat down)

But as to your querry, Snails can survive for up to a week without food. And no, they do not only eat algae. I guess if you starvethem by not giving them any food, they'd eat algae. But once they get a taste of fish food, they forget all about algae and instead dine endlessly on much tastier fish sood. Same thing goes for all algae eaters. They may nibble a little but its mostly up to you and your trusty algae scrubber to rid your aquarium of thish most henious, vile evil threat: ALGAE *muhuhuhaha* and keep its inhabitants visible.|||They can eat anything.I never feed my mine and he is still alive. All he eats is the leftovers. They do not always have to eat algie. They can eat bloodworms(frozen),brine shrimp,ect,ect.,ect.They can realy eat any type of food in the tank.

I just got a gold mystery snail yesterday and I have no idea what to feed him. I have guppies also in the tank.|||Mystery snails (aka Apple Snails) like to eat veggies, fish food, what ever they get get in their mouths pretty much. Here is a website that should help. http://www.applesnail.net|||k idk what that is but if its a real snail its a bottom feeder and u dont need to feed it

How do I get my dead apple snail out of its shell so I can keep the shell?

Sadly my apple snail, Sparrow, died and I am wanting to keep her shell. I've gotten most of it out but there's still some in the back of the shell and I can't get it out. How can I get it out without breaking the shell?|||Put some salt in the shell and let it sit over night and it should come out.|||Let it decay outside and wash it|||Boil it
