What should i feed my gold mystery snail?

I just got a gold mystery snail yesterday and I have no idea what to feed him. I have guppies also in the tank.|||Mystery snails (aka Apple Snails) like to eat veggies, fish food, what ever they get get in their mouths pretty much. Here is a website that should help. http://www.applesnail.net|||k idk what that is but if its a real snail its a bottom feeder and u dont need to feed it

How do I get my dead apple snail out of its shell so I can keep the shell?

Sadly my apple snail, Sparrow, died and I am wanting to keep her shell. I've gotten most of it out but there's still some in the back of the shell and I can't get it out. How can I get it out without breaking the shell?|||Put some salt in the shell and let it sit over night and it should come out.|||Let it decay outside and wash it|||Boil it

I found a small snail in my aquarium, but have never bought snails. Where did it come from?

I just cleaned my tank because it got very very dirty it was not very well attended by my aunt and lots of my died inside the aquarium without her knowing that they are already dead, therefore the rot inside. I did not bought any plants, Lately I found one small snail, but now I just found 6 more, am I to be worried? If so, what should I do to get rid of them??

Thanks!!|||Get a green spotted pufferfish, They will take care of them-

Snails do a good job of cleaning up algae and food your fish leftover. However, snails are prolific breeders. They eat and breed, eat and breed. What's worst, since the reproduce asexually, they don't need a partner to reproduce. In other words, they can breed themselves. If the conditions are favourable, they will surely over run your tank. Too much snails can become pest, especially in a planted aquarium, as they will happily devour your favourite plants. Common snails you will find are pond snails and ramshorn nails (ramshorn shown in photo). You don't even have to buy them, they just seem to appear out of nowhere into your tank. Since they lay their eggs on plants, they probably hitched a ride on the plants you bought at the pet shop. But how do you get rid of the pesky buggers? Removing them individually is out of the question as well as next to impossible. Here are a few strategies you can try:

Use food against them

The idea is to lure the snails onto a piece of food they like and then pull them out. A slice of cucumber is my personal weapon of choice. You can leave cucumber in your tank without worrying about it contaminating the water. Some people also use lettuce and soften it first with hot water. Weight down the slice of cucumber or piece of lettuce in the bottom of the tank at night. By the morning, you should have collected a colony of hungry (or "licorish") snails. Remove the cucumber or lettuce and discard the snails.

Tip: You can tie a piece of white string to the food and use it to pull the food from the water in the morning. The dye in coloured string maybe hazardous to your fish.

Use the snails as food

If your fish only knew how to get those tasty morsels out of the shells, they would gladly eat them. The shells of pond snails are fairly soft. Although it sounds gross, you can crush them between your fingers and feed them to your fish. However you decide to crush them, just remember they are very nutritious and live food helps encourage your fish to breed.

Get fish that can eat them

OK, so crushing them is too gross for you to handle. Why not get some fish that can do it themselves? The problem here is that if they are strong enough to crush a snail, what would they do to your other fish? These type of fish are usually aggressive and may present you with a new problem. Clown Loaches are well known for eating snails. They actually suck them out and not crush them. The fish that will do the crushing is a Pufferfish. Pufferfish actually need hard foods to grind down their teeth to prevent them from growing too long. Some species of cichlids and catfish will eat snails as well. Some fish may not be able to eat the snails, but they can eat the snails' eggs (which too are protected by a hard coating). Siamese fighters will take care of the eggs for you.

Prevention

To prevent snail from flourishing, you need to reduce their food supply. Not overfeeding you fish prevents the snails from getting leftovers. Snails primary natural food source is algae. Overfed fish produce more excrement (poop), which in turn provides the nourishment for the algae to grow.

To reduce the chance of getting snails in the first place, when purchasing plants, remove the snail eggs by gently rubbing the plant with your fingers. This is easier said than done since the eggs are often transparent.|||there are all kinds of fish that will eat snails, such as puffers and clown loaches or you could get an assasin snail, he's a snail that feeds on other snails

as to where they came from, they could have been there all the while or come in on a plant or fish (in the bag from the pet store, possibly hidden in gravel)|||if you bought live plants most likely the snail came from the plants

My garden is full of slug and snail and unable to get rid of them?

I have used many insecticides to kill the snail but find it useless, what can i do?|||The biggest reason you get them is the soil is too wet. If it's clay, add sand to it. Always water in the morning, because they are most active at night and like it damp. If you water in the morning things can dry by nightfall. Raised beds can help keep the soil from staying too wet.

Beer attracts them, so bury a shallow container with just the mouth slightly above the soil line and they will fall in and drown. (is this the orgin of the phrase "slug fest"?)

Diatamaceous earth is good. It's the little skeletons of diatoms, and they are sharp...at least to slugs and snails. Absolutely harmless to people unless you breath it or get it in your eyes. Kinda pricey, but better than insecticides. Works best when dry.|||try and get you hands on cooks slug and snail granules. If you have kids and pets you might might to try a product called sluggo. hope this works out for you|||spray plants with mixture of ammonia and water; some have set out bowls of beer for snails (it seems to attract them and they drown in it).|||put salt|||I use the snail bait from gardens alive and it works wonders.

How can i tell if my land snail is a male or a female?

How can i tell if my land snail is a male or a female?|||You can't unfortunately,as snails %26amp; slugs are bisexual creatures.

Meaning they have both breeding parts,as when they breed one of the snails will, send out a spear-like object, though either of them could do this.

So,there isn't a difference!

Hope this helps, xxx|||Wow i didn't know people kept pet snails. |||snails are both sex at the same time|||snail's are sick dirty creatures, if i was there i would step on it just for fun because i dont care 1 bit.|||Snails are hermaphrodites. Which means they are both male and female. I had 4 adult garden snails at once and they all mated and wound up having over 50 babies, lol.

Can I keep a snail in a small water fountain?

My puffer recently died and for the last month i've kept a snail that used to be in the tank in a small bucked of cycled water which i occassionally fill with water. Instead of getting a small tank for it (and possibly some shrimp), i was thinking about getting one of those small tabletop water fountains to keep it in. I was wondering if this would be enough for the snail to survive?|||provided it is the right sort of snail. Garden snails will drown if there is nowhere for them to get out.|||Ofcourse you can put a snail there

Could I keep an olive nerite snail with 6 white cloud minnows in a 10 gallon?

My snail has been in a tiny tiny tank/bowl thing for a year. It seems to have been fine so far, but since I was planning on starting a real tank I was hoping that I may be able to give it a better home.

Would it not do well in a larger unheated tank?

And I know if I do put it in I need to give time for algae to grow so it doesn't starve.|||you can put it in warm or cold water, it won't bother it - neither will the fish.

you also don't need to worry about how much algae is in the tank, it will always find something to eat. (left over food, algae that you can see.. dead fish :) )

I personaly keep Nerite's in all my tanks, except my loach tank. and they all do a great job.

How do can I tell if my black mystery snail is dead?

My snail has been floating near the bottom for two days and I looked in the tank today and it was hanging half out. I dont know if it is dead or not because I have never had a snail before.|||If he is hanging out, pick him up. If he doesn't pull in then he is most likely dead=|||There were a number of times that i thought mine was dead (after sitting for 2-3 days in one spot). When I moved him to a temporary tank, her perked up (although water chemistry was fine in the original tank).

Point is, he may well be dead, but be sure. Sometimes they chill for a couple days and look very dead.|||its probably dead

hanging out is the number one sign

see if you can pull the body out gently

if it tries to retract its overclump its still alive|||he's probably extremely sick or dead.

What kind of land snail do I have and why did it lay eggs if I only have one?

I found a snail in my backyard in central Indiana. I brought it in the house and have had it for about a year. I have no clue what kind it is. Today I was cleaning the cage and there are about 15-20 eggs. I thought you had to have 2 snails to lay eggs. What should I do with them? I wouldn't mind having more snails. Especially since I have had this one so long and it has only laid eggs once. Does anyone have any clue what kind of snail this is? Some say it's a helix snail. I dunno. Help!|||they are like any other egg laying animal. they do it even with out a male, they are just not fertilized. and i do believe that snail eggs are fertilized after they are layed by the female.|||Most snails are hermaphrodites. This means that they are both male and female. All hermaphroditic snails can lay eggs.

As far as knowing what kind of snail you have we need to see a picture!

What substrate do you use in your African Land Snail home?

I used to use Peat (before it became unsustainable and frowned on) in my snails home but have been unable to get it anywhere. I want to get another snail as mine has died of old age but I need to clean its home out and my bag of Peat has run out. What do you use / recommend and where do you buy it?|||What you need is coir (coconut fibre). You can buy it in compressed blocks and you add water to make it up into the substrate. It is a by-product of the coconut industry and is very clean and an excellent replacement for peat. You can usually get it at the garden centre - or it is available on eBay if you prefer.|||sorry but i just use peat i have found that too be best for me but if you go to a opet shop you casn buy a similar thing to peat but it oviously going to be more expensive but thats all i can think of to be honest but you will be able to get it at any petshop it just looks like soil xx

How long should I take my snail out of the tank when I put chemicals in?

I put a fungus killer in my fishtank yesterday. I took my snail out before I did and kept him out for about 3 hours. How long should I keep him out? I looked at him today and he's sitting on the floor of the tank and is kind of half way closed and doesn't look like he's moving. I think he may have died :(|||put him in a cup of his own for a day or two just to be safe. he's probably not dead, my snails sit in the same spot for days, I'm certain they're dead then the next time I look they're across the tank. silly things. best way to check if they're dead is to smell them. if they smell like rotting they're dead. if they just smell like a fish tank they're fine. you can also pick it up, if they're dead their muscles let go of the shell and they'll often times fall out. it's very gross though. I try the smell test myself, because I don't want to see my snails dumped out of their shells.|||I would say he probably isn't dead. Next time I would wait a little longer, but not so much that he starts to shivel up and die. Good luck with your snail, and I hope he lives.|||24 hours just to be safe|||That depends on what is in the fungus killer. Some of them kill snails as well as fungus. If he doesn't move around a bit within a few hours it would be safe to assume he's dead.

How long does it take for a cerith snail to hatch / have a baby?

I believe I have 3 cerith snails in my saltwater fish tank and I was wondering how long it takes for them to have babies or how long it takes for their eggs to hatch. I just saw a baby snail on the glass of my tank today.|||Native to the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific off the coast of Mexico, the Cerith Snail does best in larger, well-established reef systems with deep sand beds. This voracious feeder is most active at night. In fact, breeding pairs of Cerith Snails will lay their eggs on your aquarium glass just after dark in long, stringy curves. However, since these eggs take a while to develop, they are often consumed by other tankmates or removed from the water column by filtration before the eggs have a chance to hatch. The Cerith Snail is extremely difficult to breed in captivity. Not only is determining the sexes difficult, but the water parameters required to do so are unknown.

If you think you have babies try catching them and placing them in a baby net to keep them safe and allow them time to grow. If you don't have fish that currently dig in the sand you might be lucky to just leave the babies alone and allow them to mature naturally w/o your help. Also keep your tank a little warmer but not over 84 degrees. Check out the source and good luck.

How to remove an apple snail from my tank?

I want to find out if my apple snail is male of female, but itjust wont come off the glass, im scared that if i pull it too hard i'll pull it's shell off and that wouldn't be good :O so how can i take it out?|||Put something in the aquarium that will attract the snail, a big cabbage leaf, a slice of zucchini or sweet potato, or a cuttlebone. Once the snail is attached to this object, you can take out the object and the snail will be along for the ride.

There is always a risk with using force, such as pulling, or sliding a credit card under the snail's foot to dislodge the snail, or tapping it in the same spot repeatedly.|||just pull a bit harder. don't worry it will let go before you're able to rip it's body out of the shell.

Will my 4 fancy guppies eat a baby snail?

I have 4 fancy guppies, and a snail that had a baby, will the guppies eat the baby snail?|||No, they may nibble on the tentacles a little. Chances are there is more than one baby, snails tend to reproduce rapidly and before you know it you will be wishing the guppies would eat a few of them!! lol!! If you do run into this problem, get a yoyo loach-snails are a delicacy to them!!|||They usually lay their eggs just above the water line. A clutch of eggs could produce anywhere from 50-100 snails.

How do I get my snail to eat?

He's sucking over the areas that are already clean. The areas with visible algae he's just ignoring. When I got him, there was just a little bit of algae on the rocks around old food, now it's all over. Could he be making the problem worse? Should i get a new snail?|||I have snails and a super clean tank. They don't need anything or atleast much of anything to live . They'll live for a VERY long time without you doing anything for them. Put some live aquatic plants in there for him,. You can get them cheap at the pet store.|||I will suggest floating plants because i had the same problem, but does it look healthy because it might be getting all the nutriens that it needs, or it might be eating all the time when you are sleeping. And if your problem is that its not cleaning the tank well enough then you might want to get a few more, because snails dont eat all the kinds of alge , mabie getting different types would help because different types eat different kinds of alge.|||The biggest misconception about snails is that they "like" algea. They will nibble on it but it is not their preferred diet. Let some flakes float to the bottom and if its just one snail then drop a piece of veggie of some sort like a corn kernel or a pea and they love it, also they LOVE live plants.

A lot of people gave you dumb azz answers here. But if you google it you will find out a lot of helpful info.

How do you make jewelry out of ramshorn and mystery snail shells?

I know that something will have to be done to the shells to keep them from breaking. What do I need to the to protect them and then how can I make that into jewelry. I had a mystery snail die and I've been pulling ramshorns out of my tank ever since it go infested with them (so the supply of those isn't small).

Thanks for all and any help! |||Try boiling in water first to clean them. I would try using resin and making clear pendants. You could also try adding the empty shells to anything that has an opening that you could use for a pendant and pouring the resin into that. Recycle!

When I used to have angel fish I would crush the snails, shells and all and the fish ate them. That is good for surplus. Also the bottom feeders will eat them if they are crushed a little.

What happens when a golden mystery snail croaks?

I have two snails, and two neon on tetras. One snail just died, and it's shell was totally empty. The other snail had the front head of the dead snail. But where did the rest of it go? It's not like it's been dead for that long, so the fish couldn't have done that much work on it.

Just curious.|||no, trust me, fish will just suck snails up like jello jigglers. I had 4 snails with my goldfish, and they were all eaten. THe fish probably ate it. The other snail may have been carrying the head around like a trophy.|||lol, thanks

How can i tell if there is enough algae in my tank for my snail?

Okay, so I have a 5 gallon tank. It holds, 4 african dwarf frogs, and a snail. I believe its an ivory mystery snail, I'm not too sure, he was a gift. But what I'm worried about is if there is enough algae in the tank for him? Tomorrow I'm planning on putting in sand instead of the gravel. But I may leave just a few pieces of gravel in there for him. Help!|||No reason to keep any gravel in there if you don't want it. It doesn't matter how much algae is in your tank, there are other foods you can feed it like algae wafers and veggies. To ensure good life and growth out of a snail it's a good idea to feed regardless of algae in the tank.|||You can feed the snail sinking fish food or fresh veges if there is not enough algae.

How to control algae on the shell of an apple snail?

My son has an apple snail in his aquarium and its shell has quite a bit of algae growing on it. Is this normal? Is there a way to control it?|||In general green algae means too much light or nitrate and brown algae is either too little light or an end of cycling bloom. Either way just take and wipe the shell with a paper towel.

Do you have algae anywhere else in the aquarium? What color is it? I have found this site helpful in determining what kind of algae I had in the past. Then I was able to adjust the condition of the tank.

Where can I buy a Syrinx aruanus or other large snail for my fresh water aquarium?

I would really like to get a large snail for my aquarium, but have yet to find one that is over an inch or two long/diameter. I think that the Syrinx aruanus is supposed to be the biggest, but I don't know if it can live in a 20 gallon freshwater tank (with only one betta fish no less). Major thanks for all and any help!|||Syrinx aruanus is a SEAshell. It won't live in freshwater. Also these grow to 20" or more so a 20 gallon would be out of the question! And last the SHELLS are from $50 to $280 or more! If you want a large snail, try an apple snail. They get pretty big (hence the name) and are cheap. You can find them about any where. They will eat the algae in your tank too.

Mystery snail lay their eggs above the water line, but it sounds like you have your tank filled all the way to the top. It's trying to get out of the water to lay her eggs, but it sounds to me like she's falling back in when she hits the rim of the tank.

Mystery snails are sort of like guppies. If they've been with a male in the last few months, they can store the sperm. So unless you've had this snail for a while, and it's the only one in the tank, the eggs will be fertile. If you want your snail to lay eggs and keep the babies, lower the water level about 3 inches. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/att鈥?/a> The baby snails will die if the eggs are in the water.

This is a good website to read about mystery snail reproduction.

http://www.applesnail.net/|||Many snails like to let go of the sides of the tank and let themselves be pulled round by the water, they treat the tank like a water ride. Don't worry about it. If you want more snails, reduce the level of your water to allow them to lay their eggs. If you don't want more, the water is okay high.|||Maybe he's having fun?

And blowing bubbles?

I'm really not being sarcastic, sometimes snails and fish do odd things that worry us but really they are just playing.|||I don't think snails need filters for their water. Your snail sounds fine, it's just the current taking him.|||Maybe, that's his way of getting air. And the solid bubble is an air bubble :)

My snail layed eggs out of the water on the underside of the aquraium top?

Is this normal? I think she didn't want the fish to eat her eggs but I always thought they had to be in water. The snail got up on the underside of the lid and layed a group of eggs on it. I don't know too much about snails but I like the way they keep my aquraium cleaned up.|||Some species of snails will do that - it offers a measure of protection from bottom feeders such as Plecos. Don't worry about the eggs - the humidity and moisture from the tank will keep them alive. You should see the newborn snails soon!

Snails eat algae, and they are great aquarium cleaners!

See this site for complete snail care info:

http://www.applesnail.net/content/care.p鈥?/a>

Good Luck!|||The large mystery snails will lay their eggs out of the water, and it is completely normal. And yes, it is to protect the eggs from predation. The eggs will have enough moisture to develop where they are, so don't worry.

My mom's fish has a red spot on its belly. My mom's snail is missing (one remains seen). We don't know what happened to the fish and where the snail went and is our fish bleeding or something because it's like a red spot.|||It depends on what type of fish it is. It may be sick from eating the snail. (Yes, it's sad, but fish eat snails.) I know that when a snail dies, it turns clear and pollutes the water in the tank so your fish may be suffering internal bleeding.|||A little more info might help out. What kind of fish is it, what size tank is it and what type/size of snail is it ? I am guessing that the fish ate the snail, its not uncommon. I dont know about the red spot because it could be a variety of things caused also by a variety.

A couple of things to be sure of :

Make sure the water quality is good (buy a test kit and check)

Make sure there is enough room for whatever fish you have

Make sure your not emptying the tank and replacing all the water when you clean the tank because you will kill off all the beneficial bacteria.

Hope this helps you some.|||some snail varieties will climb out of the tank, zebra or red onion snails(snails of the nerita family) all do this.so it may have gone for a little walk... try looking around the tank or in the canopy.

as far as red spot goes it may indicate a parasite (looks like a pimple) or the fish may be hemmoraging under its skin from either poor water conditions(get a sample tested at a pet shop) or it is suffering from a bacterial infection or it may be a combination of the two . in any event you should check with a local pet shop for a coarse of treatment.|||...your question just made me write this .. Ok, snails don't normally freak me out when I find them outside in a garden, but I found a snail in my kitchen sink! It's just me and my husband, so I have no kids to be playing around with snails. We are on the second story of the apartment homes we live in. The property is well kept, but I do see snails when it rains, so they are definitely on the property. It is possible for them to crawl up the pipes?|||My brother use to have a couple snails and they would always climb up the glass. So yes it is possible, yet it seems unlikely. Normally water comes and goes from places i don't believe snails can live. So maybe you were gardening you didn't notice the snail on your hands and when you went to your sink to wash your hands snail fell off and you came back later to see a snail there. I wouldn't worry about it until you see more snails in your sink.

Ps: snails don't like salt|||If you're talking about climbing up the inside of the pipe, highly unlikely. Soap etc. that you send thru your pipes would have killed it before it got to the sink.

If you're talking about climbing up the outside of a pipe, they could, but..... if the pipe is copper, highly unlikely. Snail slime reacts to copper in that it sends an electric shock thru the snail when in contact with each other. This is why they use copper to protect plants in the garden. So even if it didn't kill the snail, it certainly wouldn't be able to stay on it very long.

Did you bring any plants in for the winter? I brought a plant in and left it by my back door. A couple of days later there was a small snail in my kitchen sink. I'm pretty sure it came off of the plant.

Or like somebody else said, you could have inadvertently carried it in yourself. I guess they'll go to a water source, which is strange, because in the garden, when it rains, they come out of the plants looking for cover.|||A good friend of mine lives in wetlands in Florida. When i visit there are large snails around, especially after it rains. They slither on glass, wood, rock, etc. So i would imagine they would have no problem crawling up or on metal pipes. Being that snails are wet creatures, it may have not entered the pipes, but sensed that water was there and wanted some.

How much does a cherry shrimp add to the bioload? Same with a snail?

I have aquired a snail from somewhere, and I also plan to get a cherry shrimp. I have my tank planned to full capacity (28l...3 cory cats, 6 neon tetras, 1 dwarf gourami), is it still okay to get a cherry shrimp? Do they contribute much to a bioload?

What kind of snail should i get to clean my freshwater tank?

I have a small tank 2.5 gallons. I have 5 fish, a beautiful blue beta, and four neon tetras. I have a small filter and two live plants. I hate seeing left over food and plant matter floating around. I would really like to get a snail to eat up the leftover food but want to make sure it won't eat my fish or my plants. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!|||You don't need to worry about having ANOTHER creature in a tank that is already severly overstocked. You need to worry about rehoming the fish you have, because I'm sorry, but there is no way they are comfortable, happy, or healthy.

2.5 gallons is BARELY enough for a betta. In fact, for a single betta it's the BARE minimum, but 5 gallons is recommended. They are neon tetra both, are tropical fish, and neons are sensitive to water quality... So they need a heater as well as the filter. The water needs to be a steady 78 degrees F.

Seriously, if you want more than a single betta, you need AT LEAST a 10 gallon tank, or return what you have.|||Adding a snail to your tank will only aggravate an already horrible situation.

2.5 gallons is too small for any fish, let alone 5 of them.

Your Betta needs 5 gallons minimum.

Your Neons, though tiny, are very active fish, who require excellent water quality. They should be kept in nothing under 20-gallons, and since they are shoaling fish, need to be kept in groups of 6 or more.

Snails are heavy on the bio load, and will bring your water parameters further off the charts than I suspect they already are.

Please bring your current fish's living conditions up to at least the bare minimum. They won't last very long in their current setup.

Fish profile sites that include minimum aquarium size:

http://www.aquariumlife.net/fishsearch.a鈥?/a>|||good lord XD, you have to do something about this. You can only have a MAX of one fish in that tank, and that is a betta (he really shouldn't be in there either).

I really (not to be mean) recommend you tank them all back to the store.

You can still use the tank though, do a planted shrimp tank or a nice planted snail tank, Ghost shrimp are actually pretty cute, and the same goes for Red Cherry shrimp, they will be happy in your 2.5 gallon. Shrimp are actually pretty good pets, i always feel bad when to have to feed a few to my puffer.

Tetras need to be in schools of 6 or more.. and need a minimum of 20 gallons, Betta needs 5 ideally.|||Your tank is already grossly overstocked. Return the tetras, they're schooling fish that need to be kept in groups of at least six to eight. For a group of that size, nothing under 20g is recommended.

The bare minimum for one betta fish is a 5g tank, complete with a sponge filter and a heater set to 80F. Please upgrade your aquarium or return the fish if you cannot house it properly.

To answer your initial question, it's not the snail's responsibility to clean the tank, it's yours. And just to let you know, all snails eat plants.|||I would be careful when selecting a snail for your tank. I found this out the hard way. I both one snail for my tank, not knowing they can reproduce by themselves. It started reproducing and reproducing and pretty soon the snails has taken over my tank. Here is some information I found: Most snails are hermaphrodites. This means that they are both male and female. All hermaphroditic snails can lay eggs. They can "mate" with themselves and thus only one can reproduce in an aquarium or pond. So make sure that when you select a snail that you select one that won't reproduce by itself.|||Don't get a snail or anything to "clean" your tank except the water changes you need to be doing. Gently scrap off the sides of the aquarium and siphon the crud out w/ half of the water once per week and you will have a great healthy aquarium. Do not any anything else to this tank because you are already pushing it for a 2.5 gallon.|||for the fish you have you will need a 10 gallon and thats pushing it. either buy a bigger tank or return your fish. if you do, you could add your snail and nothing else if that makes you feel any better

I have a large stack of documents I need to snail mail all in one package.

Is there a document holder that will hold 200 plus pages a4 to post or should I just use brown paper? Tried a universal despatch mailer which was deep enough but not wide enough and left some paper showing.

Thanks for your help.|||How about using a small box that is large enough to take the documents and then wrapping *that* up in brown paper etc. I wouldn't pack the documents alone because if the parcel got wet or damaged, so would your documents whereas if they are safely within another packet/container, they would be relatively safe. You can then take them to your local post office and send. The cheapest method would probably be parcel force. You can also buy different size boxes made by Royal Mail from any larger post office with a Royal Mail shop inside.

How to get rid of snail infestation in fish tank?

We got some live plants a few weeks back, and there must have been some snail eggs on their or something, as our tank is now completely over-run with snails. It's a fresh-water tank. Any idea how we can get rid of them?|||A friend of mine who is a veteran fishkeeper and plant enthusiast once told me that f I wanted live plants I actually also want snails because there is no way around them.

I do have some good news for you though: snails are actually good for your tank, and will help to keep the water clean.

The bad news is that most aquatic snails that I know Of are able to reproduce asexually, and breed and are born under the gravel, where you won't see them until they have matured and grown a bit. For this reason manually removing snails can achieve aesthetic victory, but it's a downhill battle: you simply can't eradicate them this way, and believe me it's dreadfully boring.

My solution has been in loaches. In our large tank (6'x2'x2') we keep 3 Clown Loaches. In my smaller 2' tank (recently upgraded to 3.5') I've kept Yoyo Loaches (Botia almorphae) which are amazing at keeping snail numbers down. They eat them as they see them, so while the snails are still there they aren't bothering you by being visible, and you get happy, fat loaches for your trouble.

Bear in mind that Clown Loaches will grow up to 1' long, and so can't be kept in small tanks for long. This is why I went with the Yoyos, a much smaller variety of loach (max size of up to 6"). One downside to my Yoyos has been that they are as Efficient at dispatching fry as they are at dispatching snails, do they aren't a good solution if you are trying to breed your fish.

If your tank is too small even for Yoyos, there are other small species of loach, like the dwarf chain loach or khuli loach (sometimes called the coolie loach - eel like in appearance) which you might look up, but I have no personal experience with them and snails.

EDIT: whups, Yoyos grow to six *inches*, not six *feet*. lol.|||I've been dealing with this problem in one of my tanks too. I don't want to tear it down as it is a very established planted tank, plants and fish are doing great. So I use a turkey baster to suction them up between water changes/cleanings. When I see them on the plants or glass i just suck em up...dump them in the yard.. I started out with more than a hundred a day.. but now after a few weeks or so I only find one or two a day..

Keep a watch out for eggs on the glass too. they lay a semi circle shape of eggs enclosed in jelly like stuff.

Other options I hear -

Put some veggies/lettuce in a container at night, remove in the morning and discard whatever snails are attached to it.

Get a clown loach if your tank is suitable for one. They love to eat them.

Get an assassin snail. I've heard they will keep thm down.|||I hope you have learned from this mistake. You can get rid of them in time by cleaning, but next time, when you add something to your tank, please quarantine it first. Who knows what kind of diseases these plants or other objects may carry.|||Go back to the store where you purchased the plants. See if they would like some of the snails back. If not, ask them what kind of fish enjoys Escargo and get one or two.|||I have herd that assassin snails will eradicate other kinds of snails from a tank but I have never found a source to buy them.|||You simply need to start cleaning them out and throwing them away. Can a put a snail in an unfiltered fish tank?

I am thinking of getting 4 goldfish and i have a tank w/o a filter, and i kno that snails clean tanks. Can i put the snail in the tank if it doesnt have a filter?

if so, what should i do to care for the snail? what do i do wiht the snail when i change the water???|||Any tank needs a filter. Also 4 common goldfish need like a 200 gallon tank. Fancy goldfish 40-50 gallons for 4.|||Without a mature filter, the ammonia produced by your goldfish will create very serious water quality issues. Great discipline and understanding of the mechanics of water quality %26amp; the Nitrogen cycle are essential prerequisites for keeping goldfish without filters. Please bear in mind that biological filtration techniques were unknown to the Chinese when they first kept fishes in bowls, but we now know much better.

These days, keeping an unfiltered aquarium or bowl is a bit like driving without wearing a seatbelt!

In any case, do not rely on a snail or indeed any other animal (including Plecostomus catfishes, or sucking loaches) to do your tank cleaning for you or to eradicate all algae. The animal will simply go about its own business (and will probably just leave meandering tracks in the algae film on the glass) as it has no idea that it has been placed into the aquarium to perform a specific task; indeed I despair when I hear of some fishkeepers complaining that they have a 'lazy' plec, etc!

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you good luck in any case.|||Not all tanks need a filter, goldfish and betta can live quite comfortably without a filter as long as the owner does the appropriate maintenance which is pretty much just changing water and if they are in a bowl cleaning the bowl. Snails will keep the glass clean but they will also take oxygen out of the water but this should be minuscule amounts and have little effect on the fish. They shouldn't need a filter either as they are generally more hardy then the fish. The one thing that can hurt them is an acidic pH, your pH should be 7.0 or very close.|||Snails wont clean your tank, a large tank which is at least 200 gallons for the fish I assume you have.

Can I put a snail in with my guppies in a 2 and a half gallon tank?

I have guppies in a two and a half gallon tank. Only three though. I was wondering if I could get a snail or something. If so what kind? Could it be an apple snail which I eventually put in my Twelve gallon? I know they grow huge! But would it attack my guppys? Is 2 1/2 gallon too small.? Are they hard to take care of?|||* For everything you want to know about snails in your aquarium%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

http://naturalaquariums.com/plantedtank/鈥?/a>|||Your already pushing it with 3 guppies in a 2 1/2 gallon. I woulndt put the apple snail. I would just put the apple snail in the twelve gallon you already have. It takes a long time for the snail to be huge. and apple snails dont attack fish or anything. There too slow. Although they do eat dead/decaying fish. Snails are very messy fish. They poop more than they clean up. If you do, You will have to do ALOT more frequent water changes. With 4 inchs of fish which is suppost to be in a 4 gallon or more, You have them in a 2 1/2 gallon. Skip the apple snail, or you will risk killing all your fish.|||Yes, you can put an apple snail in with your guppies. You will just have to do more frequent water changes to keep on top of the increased waste created by the snail. The snail will not attack your guppies. But watch out that your guppies don't pester the snail too much. If they do, it will stop moving around and start just staying in one place all the time tucked inside its shell and starve itself to death.

I had this happen with one of my apple snails. It didn't starve, but it was a close thing. I had to put the snail in isolation so it could be unmolested. It was actually the pleco that was bothering it more than the guppies, though. I have some snails in another, bigger tank with lots of guppies and they do fine.

Apple snails are pretty easy to take care of. Just make sure they get enough calcium and enough to eat. If you don't have lots of algae and the fish don't leave it any fish food or algae wafers to eat, give it the occasional bit of romaine lettuce, zucchini, dill weed or other greenery.

How do I care for a pet snail?

My dad usually puts snail poision out to protect our plants.. I picked up two snails and made a fairly large sized "home" for them with plants and flowers.. Like I said, there are two of them - they won't be lonely.

What do snails normally eat? Should I just pick some of the plants they've eaten before and put them in their home? Do they need water?|||I am glad that you are taking charge of these snails! Sounds like fun! Ok, so. I would recommend getting some soil to put in the home that you have made for him. They are used to this kind of stuff, and will enjoy it! Well, snails usually eat plants. they will also eat left over fruits and veggies that you have! Yes, the picked plants sound great! You can leave the food (the left over fruits and veggies), in the home for about three days. Then, remove the food and throw it away. But, you can keep the plants in the home for about a week. Then, you should throw them away too! Get some more plants, and then left over fruits and veggies. They might get stinky, so beware. you might wanna keep the snails in your garage or outside in their home, unless, your parents don't mind your room getting stinky! I would recommend getting a spray bottle (set it to "mist"). Give them distilled water. Spray them and their bedding twice a day. That way, it stays nice and moist through out the day. I would spray them down once in the morning and then once at night.

I wish you good luck with taking care of your new pets! Good luck and thanks for taking this answer in!|||thank you so much!

How long did it take the snail to travel?

A group of snails had been living happily for many years at the bottom of a twenty-foot well when it suddenly ran dry. Most of the snails lay down to die, but one industrious fellow decided to go elsewhere. The next dawn he began to climb to the top of the well at the prodigious rate of three inches per hour for each of the twelve daylight hours. Each night, however, he slipped back at the rate of two inches per hour. How long did it take this enterprising snail to escape from the well?|||i dont know what 20 foot is.

But 3 inches per hour per 12 hours a day = 36 inches a twelve daylight day?

(3*12 -2*12) = 12in per day

However since on the 19th day the snail would have it to the top and not slipped back. Therefore the ans is 19days.

18*12 = 216.

240 - 216 = 24.

On night 19, 24/3 = 8. So would have made it at the 8th hr after sunrise (~2pm on day 19)

http://www.applesnail.net/content/faq.ph鈥?/a>|||snails are hermaphrodites, they are both sexes. they do not need to mate to have little hermaphrodite children.did you know that mushrooms have over 1000 different sexes?|||Snails are hermaphroditic, so the answer is "both".

Some species can self fertilize (meaning you only need one to breed) and others cannot (meaning you need two, but any two will do). There are several species of freshwater snails, so which ones you have will make a difference.

The egg cases generally look like tiny oval shaped blobs of green jelly on either the tank glass, rocks, or plants. If on the glass, you will be able to see tiny individual eggs through the gel. Eventually you will see tiny, tiny little snails crawling along the bottom and on plants, etc...

Also be aware if you have loose gravel in the bottom of the tank, you might have dozens of more snails than you normally see. They like to hide in the gravel, where they are protected and also get to eat all the detritus from the bottom.|||Not all snails are asexual. Some are, some aren't.

You need to do research on the specific snail types to see if they are.|||the site above for sexing is very good. if you have a male and a female it is likely they'll just breed, but you can increase your chances by lowering the water level a few inches, they lay their eggs above water, and raising the water temp to about 80掳F to 82掳F. also provide them with more food (carrot slices, live plants, cucumber or zucchini slices, ect..).

here is another helpful site, I believe it's the main page to the one given above:

first of all, gentley hold your snail. insert your finger into the shell hole. if the snail bites down hard on your finger, it is a male and you are putting him in pain. a female on the other hand will flop around dead.

How do I get rid of the hitch hiker snail I missed on a plant I bought?

My 120 gallon tank now seems to have several small snails which I hoped would be eaten by my dojo loaches but then I moved a piece of driftwood and found a whole clump of them and now there are several more. I have heard that other loaches like yoyo and clowns are both good snail eaters. I do not want to use chemicals and I don't want to use the lettuce method since I'd have to kill them somehow after. I'd rather they be used as a food source then crush them or let them dry out. Please let me know what has been the most effective way for you to get rid of these little pests.|||Within the limits of what you feel is right for you and your tank, your only real options are to put up with them or get a few large loaches to keep them under control. Of course, that's just fish eating the snails. If you crush the snails first, most any fish will eat them.

EDIT: Then I would suggest you use the lettuce method and then instead of just tossing them out feed them to the fish. Most fish will eat them once they are crushed.

|||Try google. And also, maybe... well, first you should tell the audience if you're afraid to touch them. Then, answers will come rolling in! I suggest getting a new tank!|||If your fish are too small to eat the snails whole then crush them against the glass with your finger. If you don't want to touch them use a spoon or some thing like that. Once they are crushed then the fish will soon eat them. If you don't get rid of the snails then they will breed in your tank and you will have a snail epidemic. Then the only way to get rid of the snails is empty the tank totally, clean the inside of the tank and boil all of the stones, rocks and everything else that you had to decorate the tank. Also closely inspect the weed for any snails or snail eggs. They look like a clear jelly stuff with black or brown dots in it. Good Luck.|||Some fish medicine contains copper, which is supposed to kill snails.. i dont know if you would consider that chemicals tho? maybe you could do the lettuce thing, put them in a jar and take them to the petstore? when my uncle had them in his tank, he would just crush a few each day and the fish would gobble them up.. so they never really got out of control.. you could also crush them and put them in your plants..|||We had the same problem in all three of our tanks. We bought live plants from a local store and became infested with snails.

Our African and South American Cichlid tanks kept the snails at a minimum. I did not crush the snails as these fish were plenty big enough to just eat them.

However, our community tank quickly became over run.

We finally bought, for 3 bucks, a small bottle of "had a snail."

One treatment and snails were gone.

Unfortunately, your only other option would be to completely empty the tank (which wouldn't be healthy for your fish) being sure to scrub any decorations, etc... to completely remove lingering snail eggs.

Good luck

Control snail population in fish tank without harming fish or plants?

We have a 20 gallon tank with guppies and platys, both adult and fry, with live plants and have a massive snail issue. We've been trying to pick them out as best we can, but there are just too many. Any suggestions?|||One of the more "fun" approaches might be to get three small loaches such as the Dwarf Loaches (Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki), Yoyo loaches (Botia almorhae), Zebra loaches (Botia striata) or Blue Botias (Yasuhikotakia modesta).

These loaches are famous for eating snails. They are also active and fun to watch. For the most part, they wouldn't crowd your livebearers. When the snails (useful in cleaning up uneaten food) are gone, the loaches will do some bottom cleaning.

Remember that almost no aquarium fish will eat fish droppings on the tank bottom. They need their own food too.

Your explosive multiplication of snails may be because you have been really over feeding your fish. (They become accomplished beggars and train us to do that.) Feed 1-2-3 times a day, but no more than can be cleaned up by the livebearers in 2-3 minutes.

Also take your gravel vacuum and clean about 1/3 of your gravel weekly. Replace that 1/3 to 1/2 of the water with clean, treated, "seasoned" water. Your livebearers will be even more healthy and beautiful.

Skunk loaches can be bullies and become territorial; don't get them.

Good luck and all the best!|||You could add some loaches if you have room for them in your tank, they are cool fish, they wont hurt any other fish, and most species will devour snails. Clown Loaches get way to big for your tank. I also think that yoyo loaches are too big for your tank. I have some full grown ones in my 55 gallon tank and they are almost 5 inches long. Kuhli loaches would fit but probably don't eat snails. consider a school of at least 4 zebra loaches, at least 6 chain loaches, or at least 5 zipper loaches.

You could try to get assassin snails, Ive heard mixed results about how well they will work to remove snails, and then if all the snails do get eaten, you have to feed the carnivorous assassins meat or they can die.|||It took me years to sort out snail problems.

The main reason they appear is over feeding!

Sadly there is no guaranteed method to get rid of snails, I got rid of them by reducing the amount of food I fed, picking them out and being very vigilant when introducing new fish into the tank, as often there will be a snail or eggs in the bags from the fish shop.

Species like Khuli Loaches help, as they will eat snail eggs.|||there are several ways to get rid of snails, but many involve the use of harsh chemicals. your two best options are:

get a small group of yoyo loaches. they love eating snails. clown loaches work too but they will get too large for your tank.

your other option is:

get a glass jar and put a lettuce leaf in the bottom

fill the jar full of aquarium water and sink it in the aquarium so that it lays on its side on the gravel

leave it in for 12-24 hours and the snails should crawl inside the jar to feed. then you can just take out the jar and dispose of the snails.

you should re-bait the trap every time you take the collected snails out. repeat this process for 4-5 days until most of the snails have been caught and disposed. if there are any remaining snails, you can usually pick them out by hand.

good luck!|||Hi, the most NATURAL and SAFE method is to throw in a few assasin snails. I think 8 would be good for that size tank. They may be pricey but its worth it. It will take a few months for them to completly eradicate them.|||1. reach hand into tank

2. pull snails out of tank

Who can give me some tips about raising a pet freshwater apple snail?

I have the snail in a small aquarium and was wondering what you suggest in terms of food, water changes, decor, temperature, etc. There are no fish, just one snail. If you really know your snails, let me hear your ideas.|||K here are some tips

They Will mix with virtually any other non-predator aquatic animal. Do not keep with Loaches or Puffer Fish and other invert eaters as they will attack and possibly kill the snails.

And feeding them. They Eat par-boiled vegetables, likes peeled grapes, will eat a little algae. This snail will generally not eat live plants. Do not be shocked if you see this snail eating a recently dead creature, they are opportunists.

Also here are some more tips

* Apple snails are more active during the night when the tank lights are switched off.

* Must have calcium ( GH greater than 8d) in the water and a pH greater than 7.0 or the shell will dissolve and the snail will die.

* The condition of its shell shows the history of its life.

* If it is kept at the higher temperature range, it will move around more quickly, but will have a shorter life span of about a year.

* Any copper based medical treatments in the water will kill it.

* Does not like salt.

What is the life span of an aquatic snail?

How long does an aquatic snail live and does their shell grow with them or do they need to "move" to a new one? My snail just died, we've had her since this summer, poor Miss Shell.|||The shell of a snail grows with them. In one tank I had awhile ago the calcium level dropped and the shells of the snails grew deformed because of this. Hermit crabs will use snail shells to live in. Most of the snails that come in with live plants usually live less than a year but have many offspring. The larger snails (mystery, apple) will live for about a year to a year and a half with a water temperature of 80 degrees but three to five years in water that is in the low 70's. How do I tell a wandering snail from another water snail?

I have only three at the moment after introducing some plants to the tank?|||The wandering snail has a tall-spired, brownish shell with a very large opening, but the colour is often obscured by a covering of greyish or brownish encrustation. The body of the snail is translucent grey-brown. A very common species, it will colonise weedy garden ponds. It is the pond snail most likely to be seen out of the water, climbing on to emergent vegetation or on to mud on the bank. It does not travel far from the water, always staying in very damp situations. Eggs, in strips of clear jelly, are laid on water plants in the summer.

The best I can do for the snails and they are happy and growing is to add more algae building surface for them, plants, decor, wood. Vegetables have to be slightly blanched or throw the veg in and let it rot a few days. Their teeth can't dig in to fresh veggies. Spinach seems to be their favorite, lettuce, cucumbers(very messy). A word of caution though. Rotting vegetables raise the ammonia level very quickly so give them a day to find and eat it then pull it out. What is a specific plant a garden snail will eat?

I am doing a science project where we make an ecosystem in a bottle with a plant and animal. I am researching using a garden snail as our animal and the only things I can find that it will eat are lettuce and fruit, but I need an actual plant that I can plant in the bottle. Does anyone know what I can use?

Also, what should I do about water for both the plant and the snail?|||Hi KM,

UPDATE; Good morning. It rained here alnight. I wish I had some more info to help you. How big is the bottle? The amount of water will depend on size of the bottle. How long do you have? Some plant seeds will take 2 weeks to come up, and the snail will eat the plant the minute they break the ground. Why can't you use lettuce plants? Snails will tear (eat) lettuce up. I would go with lettuce and Bell pepper plants. Add only a few drops of water if bottle is enclosed.

I am glad to hear about your science project. I really don't know where you would get these plants this time of year. I have a large garden.

Snails love Bell pepper and Eggplant leaves. They also like green bean plants, but they will usually eat off the growth (the middle) part before the plant get started good. I really do not think tomato plants will help. I have never had a snail problem with tomato leaves. They will dig into the tomatoes if they are on the ground.

Do not use a lot of water. If the bottle is enclosed, you may get enough water without watering. If I think of anything else, I will get back to you sometime tomorrow. Have a good night. From Los Angeles|||tomatoe leaves real or artificial :)

I hear stink may be an issue so I'd like to know how to get the entire snail out and the shell completely clean, possibly polished as well.

Thanks for your help.|||I guess my first question is whay did you bring it home with the conch still in it? Many places, including Florida it is against the law to remove from the water.

Since it is dead now, you needed to cut the conch out of the shell with a sharp knife and a pair of pliers. cut and pull cut and pull. If you try to boil him in the shell, this will not detach the muscle that keeps it in the shell and it will STINK! There won't be enouh bleach to get rid of the smell once it rots.

You can also let nature take its course and leave it in the garden for a few months in warmer weather. Bugs will make quick work of the snail.|||It's not a matter of a morality flame (and just because you've done worse doesn't mean anything not as bad is okay). |||Get a large stock pot and boil it for couple hours. This will usually shrivel the snail enough that you can remove it from the shell without problem. If you have access to a beach, you can lay it on the shore in a protected place and let the crabs clean it out for you.

Once the creature is removed the inside of the shell will be "polished" but you won't be able to get the outside done to a sheen without possibly harming it.

How do I keep my snail from climbing out of my tank?

I have a medium sized freshwater snail that I bought from a local fish store. I have a small 2.5 gallon fish tank in my room and it climbs out of the small space designated in the back for my filter. I have already tried netting, which makes a big mess with the water in the filter. Any creative suggestions would be greatly appreciated.|||Be creative and make you a piece that will cover the gaps you have so it won't climb out.

Try using some hard plastic.

Matter of fact go to your local pet store and tell them you want to get a piece of that plastic that slides on the end of glass lids.

When you get it take it home and slide it on your glass and try to outline it around your filter when you got it all figured out cut it with a hot knife or butter knife.

Make sure you slide the butter knife across is fast or you will end up melting the plastic piece.

Sorry I don't remember how to spell "plexi" glass but it's basically hard plastic which is clear as glass. I find it at Home Depot in the wood department.|||The only reasons snails (I presume you have a regular apple snail) would climb out of a tank would be to lay eggs, or that there's a problem with the water quality. To lay eggs they would only go into the lid, so I would assume that the reason for the escaping is water quality, snails are very messy creatures. Test your water.|||I have a tank that size, and when I had a snail in it, I just bought the top for it, it was glass, and it kind of cover everything so I had to buy a filter that stayed inside the tank, is not very convenient. it was at a very popular pet store, the name ends with land. I guess you can figure out the rest.|||I bought a snail and after I had it for about six months it started doing as you describe. A week later it was dead as a stone. It is possible that mine %26amp; yours didn't have enough algae to sustain it and it was seeking greener pastures. I'm not sure. I'd try feeding it algae tablets, sea veggies, blanched lettuce or something like that. Don't be surprised if it dies like mine did.|||Put some vaseline on the top(where the water does not reach)this is how I keep my red clawed crab from escaping.|||Search Ebay for a 2.5 gallon tank lid.
